The Design That Happens When We Turn Off the Screen: This Was LABASAD Trip Barcelona 2.0
There is a fascinating paradox in digital learning: the ability to share a virtual workspace with someone thousands of kilometres away and, even so, build an absolute creative intimacy. And yet, there comes a moment when the pixel falls short. When the environment demands volume, texture, conversation without latency, and the real pulse of the streets. That is what the LABASAD Trip is all about. For three days, the LABASAD community once again paused its virtual classrooms to immerse itself in Barcelona’s creative ecosystem. A journey through the inner workings of the industry, the streets that educate the eye, and the kind of design you understand by touching it.
The meeting point could only be our shared home: the LABASAD headquarters. First coffees, the inevitable “oh, so you’re that voice” moment, and the face-to-face recognition of people who have spent months developing ideas together.
The first stop on the itinerary took us inside Fuego Camina Conmigo, to understand how contemporary strategic narratives are built from within. From there, the pulse continued at Toormix, dissecting the exact journey that takes place between the rigidity of a brief and the solidity of a finished identity. Two distinct perspectives, the same professional rigour.
As the afternoon drew to a close, the architecture of the trip shifted scale: the Gràcia neighbourhood. Because visual judgement is not cultivated only in studios; it lives in popular graphics, spontaneous signage, and the informal language of façades.
The second day opened its doors at Vasava, a space where creativity is breathed as a discipline of continuous experimentation. The day then demanded both a physical and conceptual elevation: a climb up Montjuïc to shift our focus and remember that the best references are rarely trapped inside an algorithm.
In the afternoon, the visit to Morillas offered the perspective of one of the great institutions of branding, demonstrating how a historic firm evolves in step with contemporary culture. The day came to a close at DHub Barcelona, connecting the memory of design with the questions we are asking today.
The final day began at BOLD, completing an exhaustive mapping of the local creative scene. The journey continued on foot through El Raval, a typographic and multicultural laboratory in its own right, before returning to where it all began.
The final afternoon was not designed for contemplation, but for execution. An in-person workshop at LABASAD transformed the wealth of references gathered over the previous days into immediate graphic production. Experimentation, getting your hands dirty, and discovering that theory only truly makes sense when it becomes a project.
LABASAD was born to decentralise academic excellence and enable talent to develop from anywhere in the world. Yet the Trip confirms a deeper conviction: education is not just the content on a screen, but the human network woven around it.
Barcelona was the setting; the community was the driving force.
